Luminwell Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every young person has access to the support, connection and opportunities they need to achieve good mental wellbeing.

Through peer-to-peer support programmes, mental health education, awareness campaigns and intergovernmental advocacy, we work to remove barriers to support and place young people’s voices and lived experiences at the centre of decisions affecting their lives.

Our mission is to:

  • connect young people with accessible, affordable and ongoing support grounded in human connection and shared lived experience;

  • equip youth with the knowledge and resources to navigate mental health services, challenge stigma and support their communities;

  • advance inclusion for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent youth, alongside young people facing discrimination, poverty, housing insecurity and other barriers;

  • empower young people through a global youth ambassador programme to advocate for mental wellbeing and represent their communities in national and international discussions;

  • strengthen collaboration across communities, organisations and governments so that support is easier to find, better connected and responsive to young people’s needs.

We believe every young person deserves to be heard, to belong and to have a meaningful role in shaping a world that supports their mental wellbeing.

GAPs IN youth MENTAL HEALTH
in canada
  1. Lack of continuity between organisations: Disconnected services can leave youth navigating referrals themselves and repeatedly retelling their story.

  2. Unaffordable counselling: Costs can prevent young people from accessing or continuing the support they need.

  3. Confusion about where to find help: Youth may not know which services are available, appropriate or accessible to them.

  4. Difficulty finding support that understands their experiences: Youth may feel misunderstood or struggle to find culturally relevant support and peers with shared lived experience.

  5. Long wait times: Limited capacity can delay access, leaving young people without timely support.

  6. Stigma and fear of judgement: Shame, misconceptions and concerns about how others will respond can discourage youth from seeking help or speaking openly about their mental health. Stigma is a recognised barrier to accessing care in Canada.

internationally
  1. Insufficient services and trained workers: Many countries lack enough mental health professionals and services to meet demand, particularly low- and middle-income countries. who.int

  2. Financial barriers and inadequate funding: Limited public investment and costs borne by households restrict access to sustained mental health care. who.int

  3. Stigma, discrimination and exclusion: Stigma surrounding mental health conditions remains a major barrier, alongside human rights violations in some settings. Mental health gap action programme (mhGAP)

  4. Limited community-based support: Many systems lack accessible support within everyday community settings. Fewer than 10% of countries have fully transitioned to community-based mental health care. who.int

  5. Gaps in prevention and early intervention: Stronger prevention systems are needed to reach people before difficulties escalate, including suicide prevention for young people.

Global Youth Ambassador program

Luminwell Foundation’s Global Ambassador Program will empower young people to advance mental health awareness, challenge stigma and advocate for equitable access to support. Through education, community partnerships and contributions to intergovernmental policy discussions, the programme will amplify underrepresented voices, including autistic youth. It will seek collaboration with the United Nations, other intergovernmental organisations and national governmental bodies to strengthen youth participation in mental health policy and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.
